Ed Center Needs Strong Community Support to Succeed

We are approaching a critical crossroads in the ongoing efforts to build our Community Education Center, a facility on the civic center site that will house our proposed public high school and also provide a range of educational opportunities for everyone, including adult education, community college and university courses.

To learn more about the status of this vital project, please visit our booth at the 4th of July celebration in Foster City and talk with representatives from the Foster City High School Foundation and Envision Schools, which will operate the high school. We will explain how key decisions over the next few months will determine whether or not the “Ed Center” will be built.

Many residents incorrectly assume that our City Council has already decided to build this facility. So far, the Council has only tentatively reserved land for the facility and could still decide not to go forward with the project.

Efforts to build the Ed Center and high school can move forward only if the Council accepts a Business Plan from the Foundation and Envision Schools. The Foundation submitted a Business Plan to the City in January 2007. The City responded with a request for revisions and additions.

We complied in detail with the City’s requests with our July 2007 Amendment to the Business Plan. City staff will review the revised plan and present their recommendations to the City Council, which could decide to move forward with the project or to take back the land and thereby terminate the project.

In order for the Ed Center and high school to be built, the City Council must know that residents strongly support them. The fate of this project depends on how effectively residents make their desires known to the City staff and City Council. They welcome public discussion and debate that is reasoned and informed and they have recently asked for public input on the three designs for the civic center site.
